Yesterday was the very last day of the last class. We had a slightly confusing group picture (we had taken three shots when Jan Willem realized that two guys in the group weren't actually part of our group and we had to start over), and finished our exams in the afternoon. I turned in my final essay for class, and then I was done!
I also had the best fish and chips yesterday for lunch. The place was sort of hidden and out of the way, but it was highly recommended to me and I thought I'd give it a shot. It was called the Coastal Shores Fishery, or something like that. It was run by this older Afrikaans couple, who were super friendly. The wife worked the counter while the husband cooked the fish in the back. She talked to us about America while our food was cooking, she said her son had been to Texas and loved it there. That's one thing I'll really miss here. Everywhere I go the people who work the restaurants are really friendly and will just strike up a conversation with you while you wait for your food.
Today is a free day. We have today and tomorrow off in Stellenbosch. After that about half of the group will begin flying home within the next day or two. The rest of us (about 20) are going on a tour of South Africa's world famous Garden Route along the southern coast of Africa next week. I've been really looking forward to it. Everyone that I've talked to about it doesn't have enough good things to say about the Garden Route. Seriously, everyone I've told about it just goes on and on about it. Last night I was out with some friends for pizza and our waitress was so excited to hear that we are going. She said it was one of the most beautiful areas in Africa.
I'm not ready to leave Africa yet, but it's almost time. It feels weird though. This weekend the first groups of people will be leaving. We've spent a month together, and I've become pretty good friends with a lot of the other students in this program. It will be nice to see my family and friends back in Arlington again though, but I'm not looking forward to the 100 degree heat. (The high today is 63.)
I'm not feeling great today, I have a cold and a sore throat, but I'm determined to power through my last two full days in Stellenbosch. I'm kind of taking it easy today, I went out for a late breakfast with some friends this morning, and I'm probably going to be doing a little more shopping this afternoon. Tomorrow, if the weather is nice, I'm going to try to go up Stellenbosch Mountain. It's beautiful today, I can see the mountains again for the first time in several days. Today there's not a cloud in the sky! I hope it stays this nice for the rest of my stay here in Africa!
