The Ancient Palace

Though it's just a ruin now, Ayutthaya's Grand Palace is still a magnificent sight to see. These days it's generally referred to as the Ancient Palace to differentiate it from the Grand Palace in Bangkok, but to the people of Thailand it's more than just a ruin.

Just by the sheer size of the stone chedis (looking very much like the gilded ones in Bangkok), one can imagine how spectacular the palace must have been during the golden days of the Ayutthaya kingdom.

It was hot at the Ancient Palace. Despite the promised cooler weather of the dry season, late November doesn't offer much relief from the tropical heat. We were feeling quite tired after biking around the city all day, and it was time for lunch. There's a big modern temple just outside the gates of the Ancient Palace, and a temple market behind backing the river.

Before heading back to Bangkok by the quicker but much less scenic minibus, I wanted to browse through the shaded stalls of the temple market. It seemed to be a really popular place in Ayutthaya to shop for all different types of traditional snack.
