Friday was the last day of midterms for the first semester of this school year. I had to proctor in the morning, but at noon I got to leave school and go to the mall!
I wasn't going to shop or anything, though it was nice to get out of the office for half a day! ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (a sort of Southeast Asian EU) is celebrating its fiftieth year of existence.

Last month I took one of our students to an English speech competition. She had been chosen as one of twenty students in Thailand to present her speech at the Ministry of Public Relations. ASEAN's official language is English, and the competition was to encourage students to think about and write a speech discussing what ASEAN means to them. From the twenty that day, our student was chosen as one of the six finalists!

Those six got to attend a special expo on Friday at Siam Paragon to present their speeches to the ASEAN ambassadors to Thailand, the Minister of Public Relations, media people, friends, family, and anyone else who wanted to attend. It was a really big day and lots of fun!
Besides the speeches, there was a round table discussion from ASEAN members discussing the issues of the organization going into the future, displays about snacks from across the region, demonstrations of crafts, and cultural shows.

It was really nice that the school let me go to this event! I really enjoyed getting to represent the school as an English teacher on such a big day. I had a lot of fun, and I'm so proud of our student who got to present her speech for ASEAN's 50th anniversary!
I also enjoyed the ASEAN snacks.
