I've been back in the US for a few weeks. It's been really nice being back in Texas. I visited last summer, but it was just for a short time, and the visit felt a bit rushed.
This visit, I've really had the time to settle in and enjoy myself.
My flight coming in from Chicago was delayed, but my good buddy James picked me up at DFW and drove me down to Waco in the pouring rain after midnight to get me back to my parent's house. He ended up staying for a few days, and we had some adventures of our own while hanging around Waco.
On my first day back in town, we visited the Texas Rangers Museum (not my favorite baseball team, but the state law enforcement agency), which is super interesting.
One cold, foggy morning James and I took a photo walk around Waco. I had carried my Canon Rebel 2000 with me from Thailand, and James had found his grandfather's old Minolta, and we were excited to take some pictures around town.
Our first stop was Lake Waco which, in the misty early morning, looked downright spooky!
After a stop for hot coffee at Dichotomy, an excellent downtown cafe, we walked along the Brazos to shoot some photos under Waco's bridges.
I'll definitely post some of our photos on this blog once I've gotten them developed back in BKK.
It's nearly Easter, and this year I was excited to have found a very... unique crossover product. Pepsi has teemed up with Peeps to create "Artificially Flavored Marshmallow Pepsi", which tastes exactly like it sounds. I'm just disappointed that they didn't call it "Peepsi".
I've also gotten to try several new beers since I've been home!
One of the things I miss most about the USA in general and Texas in specific is the incredible variety of beer flavors available.
One of the first that I tried was from Martin House, a Fort Worth brewery that I'm especially fond of due to their bravery in taking risks and trying strange things with their beers.
This beer was called "Beers, Beets, Battlestar Galactica". It was a double-winner. Not only was the name a reference to my all-time favorite TV show, it's also a sour (a spiced beet sour to be specific), which is my favorite type of beer. Sours are really hard to come by, and I'm always excited to find one!
One day, my parents and I took a mini road trip out to Lampasas, Texas to go shopping at Rustler's Junction, a shop that sells metal cutouts and lawn art.
I love small towns in America. Somehow, even though I grew up in the suburb of a pretty big city, these small towns always make me feel like I'm home.
I've already had several adventures in Texas, with more to come. I'll be here for a few more weeks, and will have lots of posts coming up on the blog, so stay tuned!
