Pink-Necked Green Pigeon

My wife and I visited Malaysia last week. We spent a few days in Penang, an island just south of the Thai border that's famous for its colonial architecture and delicious street food.

We spent our time in Georgetown, the biggest settlement on the island, and weren't really on the lookout for any new birds, but by chance we just happened to stumble across one of the birds that we had been hoping to see for years.

The pink-necked green pigeon is a remarkable bird! Most people think that pigeons are plain, boring, ugly birds, but some of them can be really beautiful. This bright and colorful species in particular looks more like a parakeet than the rock pigeons which are most common in cities around the world.

I can't believe that we have finally found this bird after so long of searching for it in Bangkok! This green, orange, and pink pigeon is really outstanding, and was something that I've been dreaming of having on my life list for some time. It's a bit like that time that I randomly came across some hornbills in Phnom Penh.

With this latest addition to my life list, my bird count is now up to 166!
