My wife and I moved into our condo a few months ago. This is going to be our very first Christmas in our new home, and we are very excited to decorate it for the holidays.
Pinky had been tasked by her work with visiting Samphaeng Market in Bangkok's Chinatown to buy Christmas decorations. I decided to tag along so that I might be able to pick up some decorations for the condo as well.
Before entering the sweltering market, we stopped in at Chop Chop Cook Shop for lunch.
Located on Yaowarat Road in Bangkok's Chinatown, Chop Chop Cook Shop is a new restaurant by Australian chef David Thompson, who is famous for Nahm, the world's first Thai restaurant to win a Michelin star. Chop Chop Cook Shop is a casual Chinese-style diner located in a former goldsmith's shop that serves classic Chinese dishes inspired by Hainanese and Teochew cuisine.
Samphaeng Lane is a narrow alleyway in Bangkok known for its famous wholesale market.
Pinky and I stepped inside one of the narrow shops and were immediately transported to a Christmassy wonderland that could even rival the Decorator's Warehouse, the "world's biggest Christmas store" in my hometown.
The narrow shophouse stores were stuffed full with glittering lights, shimmering garlands, vibrant tinsel, and an endless variety of ornaments in every shape, size, and color imaginable. Rows of faux Christmas trees in shades of green, white, and even pastel pink lined the shop’s entrance, while stacks of Santa hats, stockings, and figurines created a festive display along the walls.
Another way that I like to get into the holiday spirit is by having IKEA's annual Christmas hot plate lunch! We had to visit one of Bangkok's three local IKEA stores to pick up some new furniture and decorations for the condo, so of course we stopped in for an early Christmas lunch at the Swedish cafe!
