I had big plans for my 12-hour layover in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, after my flight was delayed leaving New York, it ended up being bumpier than I had expected. I didn't get any sleep for the entire 17.5-hour flight, and by the time I landed in Manila, I was feeling pretty poorly.
Originally, I had planned to take a food tour and explore the city a bit, but in the end, I decided to stay in the airport.
However, after about 20 minutes looking around what was probably the most bleak and tiny international terminal I've ever seen, I knew that I couldn't take another hour of this place, much less half a day.
After doing a little research on my phone, I discovered that there was a capsule hotel in another of the airport's terminals, and I set off to take a nap.
Weirdly, the three terminals of Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport are all located several kilometers from each other. That meant that I had to go through Immigration (technically, that means I've now officially visited the Phillippines!), hire a taxi, and travel across town to the other terminal.
By the time I finally arrived, I was more than happy to pay the approximately $17 USD for a hot shower, snack buffet, and capsule of my own. My capsule came with a small sack containing a bar of soap, a sachet of shampoo, and a toothbrush, and about 20 minutes later, I was laying down, exhausted yet refreshed, in my tiny little capsule.
My experience in the Philippines wasn't the most exciting, but at least I can say that I've officially be to a new country (if I get a passport stamp, then it counts!).
