Seattle Aquarium

After visiting Pike Place Market, Pinky and I took a walk down to the waterfront to look out across Elliot Bay. Seattle, despite its steep hills, can be a very pedestrian-friendly area, especially in this part of town, and we enjoyed our short walk.

We walked past the Seattle Aquarium on Pier 59 and decided to be spontaneous and buy a ticket.

The Seattle Aquarium is really cool because unlike most great aquariums in the world, their exhibits focus solely on the marine life of Elliot Bay and Puget Sound, just outside its doors. The museum invests a lot of resources into creating hands-on experiences and education and does incredible work in protecting and conserving local marine life.

They use the natural ecosystem of the surrounding area, pumping in water from outside and replicating waves and tides in many of the tanks to try to build habitats that are as natural and realistic as possible.

The aquarium isn't just home to fish! They also host a number of marine mammals such as river and sea otters (sea otters pictured below), which I hope to see in the wild as we make our way across the state.

We hadn't planned to visit the aquarium, but I'm glad that we did. It turned out to be a major highlight in Seattle.
