Durian Family Cafe

A few weeks back, I met up with a few friends to visit the Durian Family Cafe, a cafe and hostel in Hway Kwang neighborhood not too far from where I live.

The cafe is dedicated to... you guessed it... durian!

They sell all sorts of durian snacks and drinks like durian pizza, durian coffee, durian ice cream, and more.

We decided to spit a durian tasting tray which came with four different types of durian ranging from the more common monthong variety to the rarer pluang manee. Each one has a different flavor profile and texture. Some were firmer and sweeter, others creamier and more pungent. There was even a recommended order in which to taste them so as to get the best experience. It was kind of like a wine tasting.

Durian isn't my favorite fruit, but I have to admit that it's definitely grown on me since first moving to Thailand. I will have it maybe two or three times a year, and I enjoy it when I do, but it's not usually something I go out of my way to get.

Still, it's fun to try different types, and it was a nice way to spend a half morning with some friends.
