On Christmas Eve morning, Pinky and I showed up at Hua Lampong Station in Bangkok, looking to buy a ticket to anywhere. We didn't plan anything, just wanted to take a day trip out of Bangkok.

| arriving in Ayutthaya |
There was a train leaving for Ayutthaya in twenty minutes, so we each
payed 20 baht for a standee ticket, and hopped on right as the train was
pulling out of the station! It was like being in an old film; we had to run across the platform and jump up on the train as it started moving! Luckily we made it.

An hour and a half later, we arrived! I've
been to Ayutthaya a few times before, but each time I see something
different. This was the first time for Pinky and me to go there
together!

Though it's Christmastime, Ayutthaya is as hot as
ever! It's in a pretty dry part of Thailand, there's not much shade, and
I got a bit burnt!

We rented bikes and rode around the tiny island on
the Chao Phraya river, exploring the ruins of Siam's ancient capital.

And lucky for us, admission to the historical park was free to celebrate the new year!

50 baht rented us each a bicycle for the day, and with the free entry to the historical sites, we paid only a few dollars each for the full day's adventure. Skipping hiring a tuktuk driver saved us a lot of money. Ayutthaya is so small that it's plenty easy to travel around by bicycle.

Anyway, it was good to get out of Bangkok and get some sun and some fresh air! I've been having to work hard the last few weeks as we prepare for the midterm exams before the New Year holiday.

Just three more days of school! After that,
my good buddy James will be visiting, and we will be exploring some cool places in Thailand over New Year break.
