We wanted to do something fun on my family's last day in Chiang Mai, but there wasn't quite enough time to go that far out of town to the national parks. Instead, we decided to visit the well-regarded Chiang Mai Zoo, built on a mountainside to the west of town.

The zoo was HUGE and beautiful, with gardens and rugged mountainous landscapes. It could also be a bit hard to get around; some of the distances between exhibits were large and the steep hills made it difficult to walk around. Fortunately, there was a shuttle trolley that ran between several stops, making it a lot easier to get from one part of the zoo to the next.

One of the most special exhibits was the panda! Pandas are quite rare and can only be found in the Sichuan region of China. All pandas at zoos around the world are generally gifts from the Chinese government. Pandas are hilarious, and so lazy. They really don't do much at all!

The zoo also had a koala exhibit, which we loved! I've always been fond of those lazy animals! One of my big goals in life is to go to Australia and meet a koala close-up.

The zoo was massive, so there wasn't enough time in one day to see everything. We did get to see the aquarium though, which includes the longest aquarium tunnel in Asia!
There was even a moving walkway that traveled through the tunnel, although it wasn't running that day.

The zoo was a great way to spend a day in Chiang Mai, and I was surprisingly tired afterwards. After a quick shower to freshen up and rapidly packing our bags, it was time to head back to the train station to catch Train 10 to Bangkok.
This time, we would all be riding second-class. I hoped that would be ok with my family...
