Salt Coffee

Hanoi has its famous egg coffee, but Hue has a specialty too: SALT COFFEE!

This coffee, like most Vietnamese coffee, is brewed in a stainless-steel drip coffee filter cup called a "phin". Ground coffee and hot water are added to the phin, and after a few minutes, the brewed coffee begins to drip down into a glass cup of whipped salted cream.

Once the phin is empty, you can set it aside. Salt coffee is generally served iced, so you add a few big ice cubes into your cup, and stir it all up until the cream and coffee are all mixed and chilled.

Salted coffee sounds a little weird, doesn't it? But it's actually really good! The coffee has a caramel flavor from the salt.

We discovered this little cafe in Hue when wandering around the ancient city. Some things online suggest that this might even be the home of the original salt coffee, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Anyway, it's really great, and we came back twice!

After all, "salty coffee is always a good idea".

While in Vietnam I'm going to keep trying all the different strange and amazing types of coffee that I can find in the country. Everyone says that Vietnamese coffee is some of the best in the world. I have never been much of a coffee drinker, but I'm really enjoying it here! We go out to a cafe nearly every day.
