A Week in My Life: Thursday

Thursday

I woke up early this morning and took a walk down the road to the local shop (7-Eleven) for some morning coffee.

On the way, I passed one of my favorite local street food vendors, the "Fried Pork Guy" (as I like to call him). He sets up a big wok on the corner early in the morning, and deep fries crispy bits of pork which he sells along with a small square packet of sticky rice for just 25 baht per.

Fried pork and sticky rice sounds good, but today I'll have something even better! I have a breakfast date with my girlfriend who's just getting off of her night shift at the hospital where she works.

For breakfast we met up at the skytrain station and walked to a nearby jok shop. Jok is a type of rice porridge that's popular for breakfast in Thailand. It's hot, filling, and super delicious! You can pretty much order whatever ingredients you want in it. Today, I ordered a big bowl of jok with steamed mushrooms, prawns, green onion, slivers of ginger, and an onsen egg (very soft boiled). I like to add a tiny splash of soy sauce and a little sprinkle of chili on top.

I've got sort of a slow and leisurely day today. Since my girlfriend works on weekends and many of my international students like to study with me online on Saturday and Sunday, I've begun taking my "weekend" on Thursday and Friday. I don't have any in-person tutoring today, nor do I have any online classes to teach. I'll take the day to read for my grad class (this week I have to read Candide, ou l'Optimisme by Voltaire. Ah, truly this is the best of all possible worlds... ).

One of my girlfriend's colleagues is under the weather today, so she's going to have to take over her shift. That means that she's going to have to work three night shifts at the hospital back-to-back in a row. It's going to be a hard week for her, so after breakfast she went back home to sleep while I worked on my reading and my continuing mission to watch every piece of the Star Trek canon. I've already finished Deep Space Nine and Enterprise, and I'm all caught up on Discovery and Picard. Now, I'm working my way through The Next Generation. After that, I'll continue to Voyager and The Original Series, followed by The Animated Series. Lastly, I'll watch all of the films that I haven't seen yet. Nerdy, I know, but it's been a fun journey so far.
