On Friday after finishing my last class I headed back to the English office exhausted. I have more classes on Friday than any other day, and none of my rooms are air-conditioned. I shouldn't be complaining. None of the rooms at Prathom are air-conditioned at all. At least on Wednesday and Thursday I get the AC rooms all day, something that the Prathom teachers are really jealous of. The Mathayom teachers know that we can't handle the heat as well and try to schedule AC rooms for us as much as possible.

| black sticky rice sent from the principal |
Anyway, on Friday I was overheated and exhausted, but relieved to have finished the first week on such a strong note. When I arrived back in the office, James greeted me with black sticky rice. It were sent by the principal, he told me, as a way to celebrate the end of the first week. The rice is stuffed inside thick bamboo shoots which are burned over a fire. James showed me how they were meant to be broken in half so that you could get the sweet sticky rice inside. There were four servings, one each for me, James, Ryan, and Rachel. We were served white sticky rice balls with mango at the welcome tea last week, but I hadn't tried black sticky rice yet.
It was very good! I don't know how to describe the flavor, but it was really sweet, and I think that there may have been black beans mixed in. You could see them, but couldn't taste them at all. Sticky rice is a popular dessert here, and James told us that the other teachers and parents would often send us treats. They love giving us traditional Thai food!
