Photo Gallery: Siem Reap in Monochrome

Original Post: Siem Reap

As the semester winds down, I finally got the time this week to take a few rolls of film from my recent trip to Cambodia in for processing. I picked the developed film up last night, and I've got some interesting images to share!

I shot these photos on my trusty little Diana Mini camera using Lomography Lady Grey ISO 400 film.

This is the first photo on the roll. I suppose I didn't wind the film far enough before I started shooting! And so begins my adventure in Cambodia, in the tranquil colonial town, Siem Reap, the Gateway to Angkor!

Welcome to Cambodia
It was raining that morning as we set out down Pub Street. We had planned to visit Angkor Wat, but the storms made us stay in town that day instead. I had debated with myself before leaving Bangkok about bringing ISO 100 to shoot the temples, but with the weather so dark and gloomy, I was glad I decided on 400.

Pub Street
There was some sort of market or shop stall just outside a temple down a back alleyway off Pub Street. It was closed down, maybe because of the rain, or maybe just abandoned. I really like this one though. I think the grainy film and the gloomy day give it a sort of melancholic feel.

Market Stall
Because the Diana Mini is such a basic camera, there is no mechanism to prevent double-exposures, which happen fairly often by accident. These surprises, the unpredictability of my little plastic camera, is part of what makes shooting with it so fun. This double-exposed shot was intentional, though. They don't usually turn out so well, but I like this one. It's an inscription on a lotus statue at a temple, and the wat buildings exposed in the same frame.

A Quiet Temple
This next one is a picture I took of a hired tuk-tuk driver who drove us to the National Museum in Siem Reap. This image turned out to be quite dark. I like this sort of noir style a lot! I might try to experiment with this style more in the future.

Driver
And this last photograph is my favorite of them all! Pinky walks down a street in Siem Reap past a parked tuk-tuk. I think that this photograph really captures the spirit and the feel of Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The Spirit of Siem Reap
I hope you enjoy seeing these! I think I'm getting better at using this camera. It's a lot different from shooting photos on a digital camera, a camera phone, or even a good SLR camera. It takes a lot more trial and error, and a lot more luck, but I'm often pleasantly surprised!

I have a few more rolls of film to go through from the rest of my trip. I'll pick out the best pictures and post them up here soon!

  2. Thanks for reading it! I've been enjoying playing around with film again. Part of the fun is that the camera is a toy, so it's really unpredictable with some wild results! It forces me to think more about composition and framing. Plus, developing is super cheap here in Bangkok, so it's not an expensive hobby to have.
