Loi Krathong at the Golden Mount

Last night (3 November) was Loi Krathong Festival, one of my favorite nights of the year! This year, like last year, the celebrations are fairly subdued due to the recent royal funeral. We didn't go to the big River Festival like we have in the past, but instead went to my very favorite place in Bangkok, the Golden Mount!

Golden Mount at night
It was really hard to find a taxi last night - the streets were weirdly empty due to the festival. Instead, we had to take a tuk-tuk from the Skytrain station to the Golden Mount at Wat Saket. I've never been to the Golden Mount at night before, although I can see it glowing with warm golden light if I look carefully from my apartment window at night time. Up close, it's very beautiful.

Pinky and I each bought a little floating candle in our daily color - hers in pink and mine in yellow - and floated them in the little pond at the temple.

Wat Saket usually hosts a very famous and popular temple fair on Loy Krathong night, but it was very quiet this year. It felt very peaceful and special.

After floating our candles and sending them off with a wish, we began to climb the Golden Mount to see the view of the city from the top. The air was a little bit fresher than it has been, with a bit of a cool breeze.

Up at the top, it was a little crowded, but the cool breeze and amazing views of Bangkok at night were worth it.

Leaving Wat Saket, it was time to actually float our krathong! Just outside of the temple, a big canal runs through the city. It's the one where I normally take the canal boat from near my condo to the city's  Old Town. There were no boats running that night, though! Instead, hundreds of people were floating their krathongs off down the canal.

We bought a pink krathong shaped like a peacock and sent it off down the river too.

 Happy Loy Krathong!
