Wat Doi Wao, Mai Sai

Leaving Choui Fong, we headed even farther north, and soon found ourselves in Mae Sai, the northernmost point in Thailand, right up against the Burmese border. Our tour van climbed slowly through a narrow alley covered in awnings, with bustling market stalls pressed tightly up against the walls on either side.

We arrived at Wat Doi Wao, the "Scorpion Temple", named after an ancient Lanna king whose name meant "Scorpion".

The temple sits up in the hills over Mae Sai, and has the distinction as the most northernmost point in all of Thailand! Looking out from a viewpoint at the temple, we could see a small Burmese border town just below, tucked into a valley between green hills.

The temple itself isn't super unique, but it did have a really cool Buddha statue made of woven wicker!
