Macaques and Langurs

I've seen a lot of monkeys during my years in Thailand.

I've been to the Monkey Mountain in Hua Hin, Khao No (where a monkey once jumped onto my boss' head), and Lopburi (where monkeys roam the temples and more or less rule the town).

The monkeys might be an annoyance to a lot of people, but I still think it's kind of fun when I see them. I was delighted to peek out onto the balcony of my hotel room one afternoon to find a pair of monkeys grooming one another just outside my window!

Even more exciting, though, was the near-daily glimpse of the endangered spectacled langur, a rare species of monkey which is only found on the Malay Peninsula.

Before visiting Krabi, we had read about these langurs, but were shocked to see them every day all over the hotel's property!

The adorable langurs were very calm - not at all curious or aggressive as the macaques which can sometimes find great fun in stealing your stuff. The langurs were just interested in eating leaves from the bushes and vines that grew throughout the hotel, and more or less just ignored all the people.

I don't know if they were more active because the hotel has been nearly empty due to COVID-19, or if they are always this active, but it was really amazing to see them!
