Tim Hortons in Bangkok

The Great White North has come to the City of Angels.

Tim Hortons, Bangkok

Tim Hortons, the world-famous Canadian coffee and doughnut chain has opened their very first branch in Southeast Asia! We didn't have Tim Hortons in Texas where I grew up, but I've heard so much about it. Canadians love it, New Yorkers love it, and it seems to hold a really special place in the hearts of people who grew up with it. How could I pass up the chance to check it out for myself?

it's a hard decision!

It was mid-afternoon after a super early morning. I had spent the first half of the day at the Immigration Department sorting out my first visa extension before the government's visa amnesty program ends on the 26th of September. Surprisingly, it went a lot quicker and more smoothly than I would have expected! While the pandemic has certainly caused a lot of stress this year, I have to thank the Thai government for making my visa extension a fairly painless process.

I was feeling really sleepy, and a coffee sounded like the perfect pick-me-up! Tim Hortons has a fantastic maple latte, which goes well with an old fashioned glazed doughnut!

the classic "old fashioned"

But the best part for me was the maple-bacon glazed doughnut! It's such a great combination!

As we ate the doughnuts and drank our coffee, I noticed the big red maple leaf painted on the wall behind the counter. A small Buddhist blessing drawn by a monk in white paint adorned the leaf. It's interesting to see the blend of cultures here in Thailand. Every new shop or business will have a blessing ceremony before it opens.

It's not the only "lucky spot" at this restaurant, though! Embedded in the floor is a "Lucky Loonie", a tradition which started in Canadian hockey with burying a lucky $1 coin under the ice. Now, they build Lucky Loonies in each new Tim Hortons! I guess the coin came all the way from Canada.
