The Mailbox Magpie

Last year, a magpie (actually, an "Oriental Magpie Robin") made a nest in our mailbox. It was a lot of fun to peek in to watch the eggs hatch and see the little baby magpies grow up (though we had to use a replacement mailbox to actually receive any letters...).

I was delighted this year when Mama Magpie returned to lay a new batch of tiny blue eggs!

Throughout the spring, we've gotten to check in on the little magpies. Mama sits on the telephone wire above our heads, watching us closely, but I think she trusts us now. The little babies aren't afraid of us either!

It was fun to watch the three eggs hatch into tiny, ugly baby birds, and to see them grow up. Now, several weeks later, two of the babies have already grown and left the nest. There's just one left at home, and he's getting too big to stay for long! I think Mama is going to kick him out soon!

The baby likes to poke his head out and see us when we pop by to say "hello"!

I've been really into birds lately (you can see some of my birding adventures HERE on my blog: https://michaeldesrosiers.blogspot.com/2021/10/birding-in-bangkok.html). Nature is amazing! Even here in the heart of the city, we can still sometimes have the chance to get up close with wildlife.

Magpies are amazing birds! They are seen as good luck here in Asia, and they have a beautiful singing voice. I feel that we are definitely very lucky to have had a magpie family move in... even if it did mean we had to sacrifice our mailbox!

After two years in a row, I'm sure now that the magpie family will return again next year.
