For the past five years I've heard tales of the legendary giant prawn that you can get in Ayutthaya. My Thai friends always talk about them, but I've never had the chance to try them... until today!

This morning, Pinky and I met up with some of our friends; P'Bee and P'Yee (
whose wedding we attended in Chiang Rai earlier this year) and P'Noon. We drove north of Bangkok to the ancient Siamese capitol, Ayutthaya, where we stopped at a restaurant on the river.

Though it was a hot day, the sky was clear, and there was a slight breeze off the river. Someone asked me how many prawns I would eat. I said I wasn't sure. "Just one is enough for one person, I think", P'Bee said. Each prawn cost about 300 baht - nearly $10 apiece! So just how big were these famous prawns going to be?

Really, really big, it turned out. One could barely fit on my (completely normally-sized) plate!

Besides the prawns, we shared a pot of fish tom yum soup and a plate of fermented lotus stalks.

| lunch! |
The prawns, of course, were the main attraction - super fresh and delicious!
