Photo Gallery: Chiang Mai Old Town

Shot with a roll of Ilford Delta 100 with a 1970 Fujica Compact 35.

This roll of Ilford Delta 100 (one of my favorite black and white films) was shot this past October in Chiang Mai, the beautiful cultural heart of Thailand's mountainous far north.

Look back on my old photo galleries and tell me I'm not improving! Please excuse me for being a bit proud of myself! After about a year of practice, I finally feel like I've really learned the quirks and strengths of my Fujica camera, which is my constant companion on my travels. For a 50 year-old camera, it sure takes some great pictures. That is, if I can get the focus and aperture right, and remember to keep my hand steady (it's got a slower shutter).

The north of Thailand has a beautiful and unique culture - one that is quite different from Bangkok's central region. It's a cooler, quieter, more peaceful region - high in the mountains surrounded by mystical forests and misty highlands. It's one of those places that I think really looks good in black and white.

I've been shooting a lot of black and white in 100 speed. I've gotten pretty comfortable with this, and it works excellently in the bright sunlight of southeast Asia. Lately, I've been thinking about trying some faster film. My Granddad suggested trying out some high-speed (400+) film and shooting some photos at night. I might look into that soon!

I'm extremely pleased with how some of these photos turned out. These are my sharpest, crispest, and best shots yet, I think! I took a photography class back in high school, but over the past year, I feel like my film photography has really improved. I really want this blog to document my journey as I develop (pun!) my analog photo skills.

I really like Thailand's north. I just visited it for the first time last year, and since then I've been back to both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Compared to Bangkok, the atmosphere is so peaceful and laid back.

Many of these photos were taken at Wat Chiang Man, one of the oldest temples in the city. It was built hundreds of years ago by King Mangrai of the Lanna Kingdom, who moved his capitol from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.

This final picture is from the golden chedi atop Doi Suthep. Doi Suthep is a tall mountain up a winding road from Chiang Mai City. It's one of the most important Buddhist sites in northern Thailand. The chedi is said to hold a relic of the Buddha, and the temple complex and mountain are symbols of northern Thailand.
