Lat Prao Food Adventures

I've moved out of my apartment already, and I'm staying in the guest room at Pinky's house until the big move to Vietnam.

She lives with her family on Lat Prao Road, where I lived when I first came to Bangkok. It's such a great area! The place I've been living for the past few years was super convenient for getting to work, but there wasn't much street food and not much to do. Lat Prao is a much cooler neighborhood than Phayathai, which had hardly any local food at all!

Here is the chronicle of my week's food adventures down Lat Prao Road! No 7-11, no packaged foods, no deliveries - just 100% delicious, fresh, local dining.

Amazing lunch at a popular noodle shop

Noodles are one of the few Thai dishes that are eaten with chopsticks! One of the things that surprised me when I moved to Thailand was how uncommon chopsticks were. Instead, people eat using a spoon (which I've found to be really convenient). But noodles hold over a bit of old Chinese influence.

Noodle shops are really common in Bangkok, but for me it's such a hard dish to order! There are so many types of noodles, broths, and ingredients - far too many phrases for me to remember on my own. A lot of shops require you to just know what you want and ask for it, so I don't usually get to have noodles unless I'm with Pinky!

Ice Milk at Union Mall

We also discovered a new treat! Frozen milk blended into an icy drink.

There are many flavors, including green tea, caramel, white malt, chocolate, and cookies and cream. It's been so hot lately, that we ended up going every day. We even filled up the stamp card and got a free milk one day!

Jok for breakfast

Jok is Thai rice porridge. It's a really popular and simple breakfast. We went to the most famous jok restaurant in the neighborhood.

This jok was served with pork balls, fresh grated ginger, ginko green onion, ginko nut, and mushrooms. It's a super way to start the morning, and filling.

Hot Pot for dinner

Hot Pot is so much fun! You order a bunch of ingredients and a broth, which you prepare on the cooker set into your table.

You add and cook whichever ingredients you want. It's buffet-style, so you can just keep ordering ingredients as you go.

Breakfast plate at an open-air restaurant

One morning we had a breakfast at a nice local open-air restaurant. Here, you just choose a few sides to have with a big scoop of rice. I had cooked broccoli, pork, and grilled chicken.

Dinner at a small local restaurant

In the evening, we went to a small restaurant near Pinky's house. We had several dishes there, including a spicy salad with crispy fried fish.

We also ordered these really "aroi" pork meatballs stuffed with egg yolk. So good!

Another great bowl of noodles

More noodles! These pork noodles served with egg, garlic, and seaweed were from a very popular restaurant on the side of the street. There is an indoor shop area, but it's so popular that most customers have to sit at tables set up along the road outside.

Khao mun gai

Chicken rice may be the national dish of Singapore, but it's one of my favorite foods in Thailand! It was one of the first dishes that I discovered in Thailand. The rice is cooked with chicken fat, making it soft and buttery, and the boiled chicken is so delicious.

It's served with spicy and sweet sauce made of chili and ginger, and a chicken broth on the side.
