We lifted off over Bangkok just past six in the morning. The sky was just barely beginning to glow in the first light of dawn, making the Chaophraya River far below burn like molten gold. As the plane flew higher, I felt as if I was leaving all of my worries behind. I felt light and free because... I was going home!

I've been planning a surprise trip home to visit my family over the holidays for almost a year now. And the time has finally arrived! I booked the cheapest flight, which brings me through Macau, Hong Kong, Chicago, and Houston.

| way up in the sky |
The clear skies of Bangkok made way for the cloudy and cool skies of southern China as we approached Macau. Suddenly, we were inside the clouds for what felt like a very long time before breaking through at a shockingly low altitude! Macau is perpetually shrouded in a dense layer of fog, and it took me aback to find out that we were suddenly landing - I hadn't really realized how quickly we were descending! Macau is 2.5 hours northeast of Bangkok on the southeastern tip of China. It's tiny. So small, in fact, that the airstrip is out in the water and you land directly off the sea.

We've got a few days in Macau, then it's off to Hong Kong via South China Sea Ferry. I'm excited to spend some time in Macau. I've visited before, but just on a day trip. This time, I have a few days in China's tiny Special Administrative Region, and I intend to make the most of every minute that I have!
