a stone tablet at the Jade Mountain Pagoda, Hanoi, Vietnam

Saturday at Hoan Kiem Lake - the streets are closed to traffic on the weekend, and pedestrians enjoy the relaxing atmosphere around the lake at the center of Hanoi's ancient and culturally-important Old Quarter

Prayer flags fly overhead at the Ambassador's Pagoda, the headquarters of the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha

the yellow gates of the Sangha HQ

joss paper burns in a ceremonial furnace at the Ambassador's Pagoda -  people burn incense and "ghost money" to send to their deceased relatives and honored ancestors

a long coil of incense burns slowly, sending spirals of fragrant smoke towards the heavans

The pagoda gardens are an oasis of tranquility in the chaotic and busy Old Quarter - here, incense, plants, and delicate lanterns give the grounds of the Ambassador's Pagoda a calming atmosphere that's hard to find in Hanoi.

Finally, a well-focused photo on my delightfully unpredictable 50 year-old camera!
