This week I headed down to Rattanakosin Island in downtown Bangkok to visit my very favorite place in the city: Wat Saket, the Temple of the Golden Mount.
I've been here tons of times, but it never gets old.
The Golden Mount is a religious monument right in the center of Bangkok's historic Old Town. It towers above the shop-houses and shady streets of the neighborhood.
This year, I've allowed myself to get a little lazy thanks to the pandemic and ensuing lockdown. Even after the city opened back up, I have found myself staying home most days. Lately, I'm trying to get out and explore more while the tourists are still away.
Normally there are crowds of people climbing the winding staircase that wraps its way around this ancient temple, but today, I was alone.
A bored-looking monk checked my temperature with a thermometer, then waved me inside.

It's interesting to visit the Golden Mount again, but without visitors. It seems like they've refurbished the interior with brand-new statues and shrines since the last time I visited.

It's been such a strange year, but I ought to make the best of a bad situation and explore these beautiful and iconic places in Bangkok while tourism is still nonexistent.
