Paper Butter and the Burger: The Search for Bangkok's Best Burger

It's time for another edition in the search for the best burger in Bangkok! My wife and I have been enjoying visiting some of the city's most famous and popular burger joints over the past few months.

Bangkok's Best Burger Episode 3: Paper Butter

Paper Butter & The Burger in Bangkok's Ari neighborhood

So far, we've mostly been sticking to the Ari neighborhood (which is home to a disproportionate number of famous burger restaurants). This time is no exception, and on a lovely autumn morning, we sat down for a burger at the covered patio of the famous Paper Butter in Ari.

ready for lunch!

Paper Butter is a tiny restaurant with just two or three tables inside, and a few more out on the covered patio. We took a seat outside. The restaurant is built in the backyard of The Yard, a trendy hostel tucked away down a quiet soi.

We ordered two burgers, a side of curly fries, and (what else?) two ice-cold stainless steel cups of root beer.

Of course we wanted to try their specialty: the Chiang Mai Spicy, a juicy pork burger patty topped with cheddar cheese and barbecued pulled pork, and stuffed with tons of northern-style (Chiang Mai) spices, which were grilled right into the patty. It was spicy, but not too spicy. It was more spicy - as in "made with lots of spices" - than spicy - as in "hot". I really wish that English had two different words for these two culinary concepts!

I went for the Aloha, a Hawaiian-inspired pork burger topped with thick-cut bacon and a huge, juicy slice of fresh Thai pineapple. I'm a huge fan of pineapple on pizza. I think that sweet and savory flavors can compliment one another in an incredibly delicious way, and this was certainly right in line with that idea. I loved it!

One of the things that made the burgers so special were the fresh, homemade butter buns, which were buttery, sweet, and soft. The burger's weren't cheap, but they also weren't unreasonable for Bangkok, and I can see why Paper Butter has become such a popular hangout in the evenings.

Of course, this is far from the last burger to try in Bangkok - or even in Ari, for that matter! I'll be back in a few weeks with another episode in my search for the Best Burger in Bangkok.

Until then, stay hungry!
