For over a century, Bangkok's
Hua Lampong Station has been the central rail station in Thailand. Hua Lampong Station was constructed in 1916 during the reign of the forward-thinking King Rama V. After a tour through Europe, during which he was greatly impressed by European rail, His Majesty promoted the construction of a European-style rail system in Thailand. The very first rail line in the country connected the capital to the beach resort town Hua Hin, and now the rail network spans the kingdom from north to south.
Hua Lampong Station is built in a neo-Renaissance style and is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Bangkok.
Over the years, the rail network has continued to grow, and plans are underway to close Hua Lampong and convert it into a museum. By 2021, the brand-new Bang Sue Grand Station will be the central railway station in Thailand. I passed by the other day while the impressive terminal was under construction.

The new station looks like an architectural blend between Hua Lampong and Survarnabhumi Airport. While keeping the save arched dome of the old station, Bang Sue is going to be a wonder of glass and steel, and should be a really beautiful and modern building once it's finished. The new station will connect to the State Railway, the subway, and the Airport Rail Link (with a new line onward to the old Don Mueang Airport). There are even plans underway to build Thailand's first high-speed rail lines, which will eventually connect here.
I love rail travel, and I am very happy that it's such a popular form of transport in Thailand. I really ought to take more train trips...
